The Sting
Encounters with fire ants can involve hundreds of ants that move quickly and sting aggressively. They tend to all sting at once.

The imported fire ant is a very aggressive stinger. Their sting is essential to their survival. They sting their prey. On people the sting produces a pustule. Their aggressive nature and high reproductive rate has enabled them to be aggressive invaders and an enduring species.

Did you know?
An "alarm pheromone" triggers ants to attack and sting once the first fire ant has stung the victim.

When one ant stings, the chemical it releases causes the other ants to sting in response so it appears the ants are stinging in unison!

A few people have severe allergic reactions.
Symptoms of severe allergic reactions are:
... shortness of breath
... thickening of the tongue
... sweating
... an aphylactic shock

Seek medical help immediately if you have an allergic reaction.
